Pulmonary Vascular and Pulmonary Function testing programs mark a milestone

Yale Pulmonary Vascular Program and YNHH Pulmonary Function testing program
Physicians and staff with the Pulmonary Vascular and Pulmonary Function testing programs recently celebrated their 500th invasive cardiopulmonary exercise test. YNHH has become a national destination for the test.

In 2020, Yale New Haven Hospital became the first in the region – and one of a handful of hospitals nationwide – to offer the invasive cardiopulmonary exercise test (iCPET).

Last month, the Yale Pulmonary Vascular Program and YNHH Pulmonary Function testing program celebrated their 500th iCPET and the hospital’s status as a national destination for this intricate and specialized test.

During the iCPET, the patient rides a stationary bike while a physician monitors heart and gas exchange performance, blood pressure and other data via catheters inserted into blood vessels. The iCPET examines how well the heart, lungs, blood vessels and muscles perform during exercise. The test’s many uses include diagnosing and determining the severity of various cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, including pulmonary hypertension, heart failure and myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS).

The availability of iCPET is the result of a collaboration between the Yale Pulmonary Vascular Program, led by program director Inderjit Singh, MD, associate professor, Yale School of Medicine (YSM); and Phillip Joseph, MD, assistant professor, YSM.
