Yale New Haven Hospital

How do you enhance excellence in stroke care? Build a neurosciences center.

Yale New Haven has long been a “destination hospital” for stroke care, with patients throughout the region and beyond receiving the most advanced treatments from a wide variety of specialists.

In 2027, YNHH will provide that “destination hospital” care at a new destination, when the Adams Neurosciences Center at the Saint Raphael Campus (SRC) opens to patients.

“We’re excited about the new Center, which will enhance our stroke services and allow us to deliver the highest-quality, expedited care in a centralized location,” said Joseph Schindler, MD, Yale New Haven Hospital clinical chief of Vascular Neurology; director, Comprehensive Stroke Center and Telestroke Service; and professor of Neurology and Neurosurgery, Yale School of Medicine.

Currently, YNHH’s York Street Campus (YSC) is certified by The Joint Commission as an Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center; the SRC is certified as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center. Inpatient services include a dedicated Neuro-Intensive Care Unit and stroke service with a patient- and family-centered approach to treatment and rehabilitation. Through the Telestroke program, Stroke Center physicians remotely work with clinicians at partner hospitals to provide expert acute care for patients without physically transferring them to YNHH.

Dr. Schindler noted that this exceptional care will continue at the Adams Neurosciences Center, with some additional advantages. The Center will expand access to specialists in neurology, vascular neurology, neurovascular surgery and neuro-intensive care. It will offer comprehensive diagnostic, treatment and support services in one location. These include a dedicated intermediate stroke care unit for inpatients, who are currently cared for in different areas at the YSC. The Neuro-Intensive Care Unit currently at the YSC will relocate to the Adams Neurosciences Center, which will also have a neurorestoration center and rehabilitation gym with the latest technology and equipment. Patient rooms at the new Center are single-bed, larger and designed to enhance the patient and family experience. Research for a wide range of neurological conditions also will continue at the Adams Neurosciences Center, paving the way for new treatments.

“We look forward to offering cutting-edge treatments and research to even more patients with complex medical conditions,” Dr. Schindler said. “This brand-new Center will really showcase the world-class stroke care and research available right here at Yale New Haven Hospital.”
