Ahmad Bani Hani, MD, is a pediatric urologist who treats children who have birth defects that affect the kidneys, bladder, or genitals.
“We focus on early diagnosis and we work closely with parents to offer counseling and management strategies that can help children with these issues improve their renal function, as well as their quality of life,” Dr. Bani Hani says.
All treatment plans put families at the center. “Our goal is to first diagnose the child, and then explain the issue to the family as well as the implications for their future,” he says. “We then, as a team, come up with a strategy to optimize the child’s daily life.”
Dr. Bani Hani is the urological director of the Spina Bifida and Transitional Care Clinics at Yale New Haven Hospital. “We tend to see kids up to age 18, but one thing that is unique about pediatric urology at Yale Medicine is that we follow them further into adulthood with a special, dedicated clinic, which offers them continuity of care.”
Dr. Bani Hani says he was drawn to his specialty because he loves working with children and having the ability to improve their lives. He has a special interest in treating neurogenic bladder and bowel conditions, such as those that affect the nerves controlling the bladder and bowel, as well as adolescents who have varicoceles, an enlargement in the veins in the scrotum.
His research focuses on quality of life outcomes in children with these conditions.
