Brad J. Yoo, MD is an orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in trauma and fracture care. He treats fractures and post-fracture complications, along with deformities and arthritis of the lower extremities. He performs technically precise surgeries for complex fractures that aren’t healing properly or that have healed in an incorrect position.
Dr. Yoo has extensive experience working at tertiary, level-one trauma centers and has treated fractures of all types and complexities. He appreciates that injury can be a disruptive event to both patients and their families. “Injury can be anxiety-provoking,” says Dr. Yoo, adding that it’s important to treat situations with compassion. His ultimate goal is to help patients regain the mobility and function they had before their problem, but his first step is to start with a conversation, he says.
“It is important to take time to give each patient a realistic assessment of their condition, and educate them about aspects of their care that they are not familiar with,” he remarks. “For example, I specialize in fractures of the calcaneus, talus and midfoot. These are bones most people are unfamiliar with until they fracture them, let alone how their lives will be subsequently affected. I try to explain their condition in a way that they will understand. I want to detail all available treatment options and what their ultimate outcome may be.”
Often patients learn they have choices they didn’t know existed and provide valuable input about their own care. “I appreciate their perspective,” Dr. Yoo says.
