Biography - Daniel J. Zanchetti, MD

Daniel Zanchetti, MD, is a general gastroenterologist with advanced training in both gastroenterology and geriatrics.

Dr. Zanchetti says his initial inspiration at a young age was watching the relationship his grandfather had with his cardiologist. He was drawn to the opportunity for a doctor to develop a deeply trusting relationship with a patient and their family and follow this patient throughout their lives. “I remember his doctor saying he’d taken care of my grandfather for his whole career and that truly resonated with me,” Dr. Zanchetti says. “I believe in the continuity of care and the potential to take care of a patient and their family members for the long haul. It’s an honor and privilege that I hoped to one day achieve.”

Dr. Zanchetti says that his decision to specialize in gastroenterology was an easy one, because of his passion for both the procedural aspect of GI, combined with patient care, advocacy, and long-term wellness. “I love the idea that we can do a screening colonoscopy and remove a polyp and have therefore prevented someone from getting colon cancer down the road,” he says. “It’s a truly remarkable tool. Additionally, there is such opportunity to improve the lives of my patients by taking care of long-term GI issues such as irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease and other issues that can affect all age spans.”

Dr. Zanchetti has advanced training in colon cancer screening, irritable bowel syndrome, capsule endoscopy, GERD, hemorrhoid banding, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, and hepatology. He performs upper and lower diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, which includes management of gastrointestinal bleeding, complex polypectomy, and endoscopic dilation as well as BRAVO pH studies. Dr. Zanchetti describes his role as being a true patient partner. He believes greatly in wellness and looking at a patient as a whole.

Dr. Zanchetti completed a fellowship in gastroenterology and geriatrics. He says he finds great meaning in navigating through the complexity of medical decision-making when it comes to treating older patients. “They often have a host of medical problems they are managing and there is a lot that needs to be addressed,” he explains. “This is sometimes the hardest part for the patient, and I take pride in working with patients and their families around this to provide medical care and support so that they feel like they have a partner. With my patients, I don’t take their trust lightly, and I take the time to break things down and explain what is going on medically.”

He received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine and did his residency training at Mount Sinai Medical Center, where he served as chief resident and also received the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Excellence in Teaching Award. He completed a combined fellowship in gastroenterology and geriatrics at Boston Medical Center and is a Harvard Macy Scholar. He has also been awarded the Vincent A. Deluca, M.D. Digestive Diseases Fellowship Teaching Award.
