Frederick L. Altice, MD, is an infectious diseases and addiction medicine specialist who cares for patients with complex medical conditions at the intersection of infection, substance use, and mental health. He provides inpatient care at Yale New Haven Hospital, where he is frequently consulted on serious and life-threatening infections, and delivers outpatient care in addiction treatment programs, including within the Connecticut Department of Correction.
Dr. Altice has a particular clinical focus on HIV, viral hepatitis (hepatitis B and C), and tuberculosis, as well as severe infections commonly associated with substance use and chronic illness, including endocarditis, skin and soft tissue infections, osteomyelitis, and infections in immunocompromised patients. His approach emphasizes comprehensive, patient-centered care that addresses not only the infection itself, but also the underlying medical, behavioral, and social factors that influence health outcomes.
A central component of Dr. Altice’s clinical work is integrating infectious diseases treatment with addiction care. He has helped develop and implement clinical pathways that expand access to evidence-based treatments, including medications for opioid use disorder such as methadone and buprenorphine, alongside care for HIV and other infectious diseases. His work in both community and correctional settings reflects a commitment to reaching patients in environments where care is often fragmented and access is limited.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Altice is a professor of medicine (infectious diseases) and of epidemiology (microbial diseases) at Yale School of Medicine. His research focuses on improving how care is delivered for patients with co-occurring infectious diseases and substance use disorders, particularly in settings affected by stigma, limited resources, and structural barriers. He has led efforts to design and implement integrated models of care both in the United States and globally, with ongoing work in countries including Malaysia, Ukraine, and Peru.
Dr. Altice received his medical degree from Emory University and completed his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in infectious diseases at Yale School of Medicine.
