Hiroshi Sogawa, MD, is a surgeon who specializes in liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery. He focuses on treating patients in need of liver, kidney, and pancreas transplants, as well as those requiring complex surgeries of the liver and bile ducts. He advocates for living donor liver transplantation to improve outcomes and quality of life for his patients.
“For my patients, the most important thing to know is that I will be fully present for you,” he says. “I take time to listen, explain your options clearly, and guide you through every step of the process. Surgery is only one part of the journey—my commitment is to you and your family before, during, and long after the transplant.”
As surgical director of the Liver Transplant Program at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Sogawa is dedicated to expanding access to transplantation services and integrating innovative surgical techniques. His research interests include optimizing organ preservation, enhancing transplant immunology, and improving immune tolerance. He has contributed significantly to the transplant field through peer-reviewed research and lectures at national and international meetings.
Dr. Sogawa chose transplant surgery “because it offers something truly extraordinary—the opportunity to give someone a second chance at life. Helping patients move from organ failure to recovery is one of the most meaningful experiences in medicine. I am especially passionate about expanding access to transplantation, including living donor options, so that more patients can receive the care they need safely and sooner.”
He adds, “My goal throughout my career has been simple: provide excellent, compassionate care while continuously improving how we deliver it. I believe great outcomes come from careful preparation, teamwork, and clear communication. I also care deeply about mentoring the next generation of surgeons and building strong, supportive transplant teams.”
Dr. Sogawa received his medical degree from Shiga University of Medical Science in Japan and completed fellowships focused on multi-organ transplant and hepatobiliary surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center. He also undertook a research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
