Biography - James J. Yue, MD

James Yue, MD, is a pioneer in lumbar and cervical disc replacement, and has helped lead the way in developing minimally invasive spinal surgery techniques. He tells new patients not to worry. “I have broad experience in treating many types of spinal pathologies and can usually help,” he says.

Dr. Yue, an associate professor of orthopaedics and rehabilitation at Yale School of Medicine, is co-director of the Yale Medicine Orthopaedic Spine Section. He has been a principle investigator in many clinical trials seeking further advances in cervical disc and lumbar replacement, and arthroscopic spinal surgery. He was the primary investigator in U.S. Food and Drug Administration studies that led to transformation of lower back pain and herniated disc treatments. He also advanced the use of endoscopic surgery to treat multiple herniated discs at once, providing a new option for patients with herniated discs that do not respond to drugs or physical therapy.

“Combining orthopaedic principles of motion preservation and functional restoration with minimally invasive surgical techniques is of great interest to me as a clinician,” he says. Dr. Yue has been recognized as one of Becker’s Spine Review’s Top 20 National Spine Leaders and one of Castle Connolly Medical Ltd’s Top Doctors.
