Maximilian Stahl, MD, is an internist specializing in hematology and oncology, with a focus on leukemia and other myeloid malignancies. He provides comprehensive care for patients with acute and chronic leukemias, myelodysplastic syndromes, and related blood disorders.
Dr. Stahl believes in open communication and being transparent with patients about their disease and treatment options. “I want my patients to feel free to ask me a lot of questions,” he says. “I believe that by understanding their disease better, a lot of a patient’s fear surrounding their cancer diagnosis can often be reduced. I also welcome family members to join the visits with me, as I understand that cancer often affects the entire family. While we cannot always promise a positive outcome, my entire team and I will work very hard to give patients the best treatment available.”
As an assistant professor of medicine at Yale School of Medicine and director of the Leukemia and Myeloid Malignancy Program at Yale Cancer Center, Dr. Stahl leads research into innovative therapies for blood cancers. He conducts clinical trials investigating new treatment approaches and uses molecular studies to better predict patient outcomes and is active in national initiatives such as the National Cancer Institute’s MyeloMATCH Precision Medicine Initiative.
Dr. Stahl became drawn to the field of oncology when his grandfather was diagnosed with cancer. “There were few treatment options available,” he shares. "Improving therapies for patients with cancer in the future was the major motivation for me to pursue a career in oncology. My goal is to develop novel and better therapies for patients diagnosed with leukemia and other myeloid neoplasms who have currently no adequate standard of care options available to them. I hope that by the time I retire, we will be able to cure all patients affected by leukemia.”
Dr. Stahl received his medical degree from Hannover Medical School in Germany, completed residency training at Yale School of Medicine, and pursued fellowship training in hematology and medical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center where he also served as chief resident. He subsequently pursued fellowship training in hematology and medical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
