Michelle M. Maeng, MD, is an assistant professor at Yale School of Medicine. She is a board-certified ophthalmologist with subspecialty training in oculoplastic, reconstructive, and orbital surgery. Dr. Maeng is also a member of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) and North American Society of Academic Orbital Surgeons (NASAOS).
Dr. Maeng received her undergraduate degree at Boston University on a Presidential Scholarship. There, she received the Twiness Award, given to those who exemplify service, loyalty, thoughtfulness, and excellence of scholarship. After receiving her medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine, she completed her general surgery internship at Weill Cornell Medicine.
Dr. Maeng completed her ophthalmology residency at the Edward S. Harkness Eye Institute at Columbia University Medical Center, where she served as chief resident and was awarded the Golden Needle Driver for surgical excellence. During that time, she was given the Humanitarian Award by Women in Ophthalmology for her nonprofit work in Kenya. Dr. Maeng completed a two-year fellowship approved by ASOPRS with renown surgeons, Drs. David Tse and Thomas Johnson, at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.
Dr. Maeng’s clinical and research interests span the breadth of oculoplastic surgery for both pediatric and adult populations. She specializes in orbital tumors, thyroid eye disease, bulging eyes, orbital decompression, cancers of the eyelids and orbit, blepharoplasty, ptosis repair (drooping eyelids), correction of eyelid malposition (entropion, ectropion, retraction), facial trauma and reconstruction, lacrimal outflow obstruction, anophthalmic sockets, as well as surgical management of intracranial hypertension (optic nerve sheath fenestration).
In her free time, Dr. Maeng loves being active in the outdoors and spending time with her family.
