Oliver Karam, MD, PhD, specializes in pediatric critical care medicine. He diagnoses and treats severe health issues in critically ill children and manages life-threatening conditions using advanced life support systems, as well as addressing common complications such as bleeding and thrombosis (severe blood clots that block normal blood flow).
As a professor of pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Karam conducts research on blood transfusion strategies in critically ill children. He aims to improve outcomes by refining definitions and treatment protocols for bleeding and thrombotic complications. He also explores the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO, a form of advanced, short-term life support for patients with heart or lung failure) and analyzes its psychological impacts on parents, guiding efforts to enhance family support.
“What drew me to pediatric critical care is the combination of treating very sick children and seeing how quickly many of them recover,” Dr. Karam says. “In the pediatric intensive care unit, we often care for children at their most critical moment, yet with the right care and teamwork, the vast majority improve and are able to go home to their families.”
Dr. Karam also values the opportunity to work on research that can improve care for critically ill children: “The goal is not only to help the patients we treat today, but also to develop evidence that can improve outcomes for the millions of children who require intensive care around the world each year.”
Dr. Karam received his medical degree from the University of Geneva in Switzerland, where he also completed a residency in pediatrics, and then pursued fellowship in pediatric critical care medicine at the University of Montreal. He received his doctoral degree in clinical research at the University of Lille in France.
