Omar R. Shakir, MD, MBA

Dr. Shakir is the owner and founder of Coastal Eye Surgeons and Coastal Eye Surgery Center, where he offers a high level of personalized eye care and surgery. He has been named a Top Cataract Surgeons in America, and has been awarded New York Magazine Top Doctor, Connecticut Magazine Top Doctor, Fairfield County Top Doctor and Castle Connolly Top Ophthalmologist and Retina Surgeon. Dr. Shakir performs laser cataract surgery in his office, and also performs vitrectomies for various retinal problems such as retinal detachment. He is a consultant to most major eye industry companies and serves on the board for eye-related companies. He was born and raised on the Space Coast of Florida. He attended Union College where he played Division III College Baseball and was a Liberty League Scholar-Athlete. There, he majored in Political Science and Biology. Dr. Shakir completed medical school at Albany Medical College and was part of the prestigious Leadership in Medicine program. In medical school, Dr. Shakir earned multiple ophthalmology research awards and spent time at the Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins University doing world-class research. He furthered his medical training with internship at Johns Hopkins University and residency at the University of Florida. He then went on to complete a two-year Vitreous and Retina Surgery Fellowship at Yale University
