Rakesh D. Mistry, MD, MS, is a pediatric emergency medicine physician who cares for acutely ill and injured children and adolescents. He focuses on providing efficient, patient-centered, comprehensive care for young patients in emergency situations.
“Caring for children is among the most rewarding aspects of my job,” Dr. Mistry says. “Every interaction is rewarding and beneficial to patients and their families, no matter how minor or severe the illness. Children are resilient. Even when they are sick, they want to play, chat, and smile.”
Dr. Mistry also leads the Section of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, managing a team of physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and staff to provide the highest quality emergency care for children, training future pediatric emergency physicians, and leading a renowned clinical research program.
"The emergency department adds a dimension that is unique—rapid decision making, multidisciplinary collaboration, and the need for calm in chaos,” Dr. Mistry says. “Emergency medicine is a team sport. It is so enjoyable to work with trainees, nurses, child life specialists, emergency department technicians, EMS personnel, unit clerks, and other staff to provide the best care and experience for our most important patients.”
As a professor of pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Mistry’s research centers on improving the management of infectious diseases in the emergency department, particularly by developing antimicrobial stewardship programs that help ensure antibiotics are used safely and effectively. He is also committed to advancing faculty development and mentoring future specialists in child health and emergency medicine.
Dr. Mistry earned his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and a masters of science degree in Epidemiology from the Medical College of Wisconsin.
