Biography - Teodoro E. Jerves Serrano, MD

Teodoro Jerves Serrano, MD, is a clinical and biochemical geneticist who cares for patients and families of all ages, from the neonatal period to adulthood, with inherited metabolic diseases and other genetic conditions.

Dr. Jerves Serrano specializes in the diagnosis and management of inherited metabolic diseases in which the body is unable to effectively process certain sugars, fats and proteins. Some of these conditions like maple syrup urine disease, galactosemia, tyrosinemia, X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy among others are part of the newborn screening program. He is also involved in the Pediatric Cardiogenetics Program, where he explores the genetic factors contributing to heart diseases in both children and adults.

As an assistant professor of genetics at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Jerves Serrano actively participates in medical education preparing the next generations of medical students, residents, and fellows. His research is dedicated to understanding how genetic variations can influence the development and management of inherited metabolic diseases and cardiovascular conditions. His work aims to provide insights into personalized treatment plans that consider an individual's genetic makeup, ultimately improving patient outcomes. He also helps to find answers for individuals without a diagnosis as a consultant for the Undiagnosed Disease Network.

Dr. Jerves graduated from Universidad de Cuenca in Ecuador, with a medical degree. Then, he completed his internal medicine residency at Morristown Medical Center and further specialized in clinical genetics and genomics, medical biochemical genetics and clinical biochemical genetics at the National Institutes of Health. He is the only provider Connecticut with dual board certification in clinical biochemical genetics and medical biochemical genetics.
