Hypertension Program
The Hypertension Program at Yale New Haven Hospital is designed for patients with complex high blood pressure (hypertension) conditions. Complex conditions include high blood pressure brought on by a separate medical condition (secondary hypertension) and other blood pressure disorders, including resistant hypertension and labile hypertension.
What to expect as a patient
During a patient’s visit, a hypertension specialist will perform a complete evaluation, order medical tests as needed and create a treatment plan. Our goal is to help each patient achieve optimal health. Depending on findings, patients may have their care co-managed by their primary care physician and a Hypertension Program physician or APRN.
Conditions and Treatments
The Hypertension Program evaluates and treats:
- Resistant or difficult to control hypertension
- Suspected white coat and masked hypertension
- Causes of secondary hypertension
- Renovascular hypertension — atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis and fibromuscular dysplasia
- Adrenal hypertension, such as primary aldosteronism and pheochromocytoma
- Labile hypertension and related syndromes
- Neurogenic orthostatic hypotension and neurogenic supine hypertension
- Hereditary forms of hypertension (in partnership with the YNHH Cardiovascular Genetics Program and the Yale Inherited Kidney Disease Program)
Tests
- 24-hour blood pressure monitoring
- Central blood pressure and arterial stiffness assessments using pulse wave analysis
- Total body water and extracellular fluid volume (bioimpedance) evaluation
