Lactation Support Options

Prenatal care

Are you feeling nervous about what feeding will look like after baby is born? We can help you create a personalized plan and provide education to get things off to a good start. We offer one-on-one appointments with our advanced practice providers. Prenatal appointments are individualized but can include antenatal hand expression of breastmilk prior to delivery, medication safety review, after delivery plans including those that may anticipate NICU admission. We can also discuss general breastfeeding education and back to work planning. Our team also provides prenatal visits and plans for patients who may be at risk for breastfeeding issues, including those with a history of breastfeeding/chestfeeding issues, breast surgery or endocrine disorders. Most insurance is accepted. Yale Health Plan patients require prior authorization. To schedule an appointment, call 203-688-MILK (6455)

In-Person and Online Classes

Choose from multiple online and in-person classes that cover the basics of lactation, including proper latch-on, infant feeding cues, positioning and how to establish a good milk supply.

In the Hospital

As a Baby-Friendly hospital, we prioritize optimal care for infant feeding and bonding with your baby. After you give birth and before you leave the hospital, our specially trained maternity nurses provide hands-on teaching. Certified lactation consultants are available 7 days a week when breastfeeding issues occur, such as latching difficulties, pain and low milk supply.

Breast Pump Coordinator

While in the hospital, our onsite breast pump coordinator will work directly with the lactation team to identify families that have not already received an insurance covered breast pump. Once the patient’s insurance eligibility is verified, the coordinator will meet with mom to discuss different pump options that are covered under their individual insurance plan. Families will now have the option to leave with their insurance covered pump at time of discharge. This service is available 7 day a week. No more having to wait for the breast pump to arrive in the mail. For more information call 508-801-4268.

Once You're Home

Complete Lactation Care

Our Advanced Practice Provider Lactation Consultants provide individualized, one-to-one appointments, available in person or through video visits. All of our Advanced Practice providers are also Internationally Board-Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) and have extensive training in maternal lactation, infant oral anatomy, feeding, and breast pumping. They can diagnose and prescribe for both you and your baby if needed. We commonly work with families who are having issues with:

  • babies with poor weight gain
  • Latching difficulties
  • Sore/cracked nipples
  • low milk production
  • overproduction or high milk production
  • Mastitis
  • Exclusive Pumping
  • Back to work planning/pumping
  • Inducing lactation for adoption or births via surrogacy

The initial consultation includes a confidential discussion of the medical history of parent, baby and birth story. Our lactation consultant will then provide an assessment and provide recommendations, along with a written detailed plan. Appointments generally last an hour. In person appointments can also include bilirubin and weight checks. Partners are welcome and encouraged to participate.

Most insurance is accepted. Yale Health Plan patients require prior authorization. To schedule an appointment, call 203-688-MILK (6455).

Video Visit Consultations are done in the comfort and safety of your home using a smartphone or tablet.

Our team also provides prenatal visits and plans for patients who may be at risk for breastfeeding issues; including those with a history of breastfeeding/chestfeeding issues, breast surgery or endocrine disorders.
