What is low dose radiation therapy?

LDRT is a painless x-ray treatment that targets the inflammatory cells of the affected joint. LDRT decreases pain signals within the joint, resulting in less pain and improved joint function. Research indicates that many patients with dupuytren’s contracture and osteoarthritis experience some degree of relief and/or improved joint function following LDRT.

Who can benefit from LDRT?

LDRT is not suitable for everyone. However, it can be highly beneficial for individuals over the age of 40 who meet specific criteria.

LDRT is most effective for patients who have not responded well to conservative treatments such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroid injections, and/or physical therapy. It is particularly beneficial for individuals experiencing chronic pain and inflammation despite these interventions.

For those who are not ideal candidates for joint replacement surgery due to medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, or obesity, this offers an alternative path to pain relief without the risks associated with surgical procedures.

It’s important for candidates to understand that this therapy is not a cure for osteoarthritis but rather a treatment to alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life. LDRT does not prevent patients from undergoing joint replacement surgery in the future. Due to the low dose, subsequent surgery remains safe. Patients should discuss their goals and treatment expectations with their healthcare provider.

What is Dupuytren’s Contracture?

Dupuytren’s Contractor is a progressive condition which affects the connective tissue beneath the skin and can limit hand movement, making everyday activities like typing, cooking, or holding a coffee mug uncomfortable or awkward. If your fingers are curling inward or your palm feels unusually tight, you may be experiencing more than just stiffness in your hands and could be a sign of Dupuytren’s contracture.

How is Dupuytren’s Contractor treated?

While surgery is an effective way to treat Dupuytren’s contracture, it is not the only option. At Yale New Haven Health, our board-certified radiation specialists offer low-dose radiation therapy (LDRT) as a safe, non-invasive alternative. This treatment can ease symptoms and slow the condition’s progression, especially in its early stages.

How does LDRT treat Dupuytren’s Contracture?

Dupuytren’s contracture develops when fibrous connective tissue in the palm becomes thick and tight. Over time, this tissue can form rope-like cords that pull the fingers toward the palm, reducing flexibility and limiting range of motion.

LDRT targets the overactive tissue to slow or halt disease progression. Starting treatment early helps preserve hand function and can often help you avoid or delay surgery.

What can you expect from LDRT treatment?

Different from high-dose radiation used to treat cancer, LDRT involves very low doses of radiation delivered in a precise and controlled way. Most patients receive 5 treatments, take a 10-week break, and then undergo a second round of 5 treatments. Patients typically report no pain, downtime, or significant side effects.

You can resume your regular routine immediately after each treatment session. Many patients begin noticing less tightness and tenderness within weeks.

Is LDRT Safe?

Yes, LDRT is a safe and effective treatment. For years, doctors in Europe have safely used LDRT to treat non-cancerous conditions like Dupuytren’s Contracture. Today, more doctors and patients in the United States are embracing this option, which offers effective relief and minimal risk. It is a good choice for those who are not ideal candidates for surgery due to age or other health concerns.

What are the benefits of LDRT for osteoarthritis treatment?

This therapy does not change the joint structure itself, but instead it helps relieve the inflammation that contributes to pain. LDRT shows strong potential as a treatment for osteoarthritis, offering several benefits compared with conventional therapies, including:

  • Minimal side effects: Side effects from LDRT are rare. Patients may experience slight skin irritation or temporary mild fatigue. There are no documented long-term side effects.
  • Non-Invasive alternative: This therapy is a painless and non-invasive procedure. There is no need for hospitalization or anesthesia. This makes LDRT a viable option for individuals who are not ready or cannot safely undergo surgery. It also does not prevent patients from getting surgery or joint injections in the future.
  • Improved mobility and functionality: Reduced pain allows for increased movement. After LDRT, patients have been able to increase their physical activities including walking, climbing stairs, gardening and golfing with less pain.
  • Pain relief: Clinical studies demonstrate that LDRT can significantly reduce pain levels by targeting inflammatory processes within the joint. Many patients report noticeable improvements in pain levels within weeks of completing their treatment regimen.
