Intensive Care Units

Yale New Haven Hospital's intensive care units provide specialized care and treatment for critically ill patients. Many of our ICUs offer specialization by various disciplines including cardiac care, neuroscience, neonatal, pediatric and transplantation.

Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU)

The Cardiac ICU (CICU) cares for adult cardiac patients with life-threatening critical illness, particularly heart attack/coronary artery blockages, heart failure, heart-muscle conditions and irregular heartbeat.

The unit supports patients through diagnostic procedures such as cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology studies and devices such as pacemakers, intra-aortic balloon pumps and left ventricular assist devices. The unit also provides drug-eluting stents and brachytherapy.

The CICU is staffed by a specialized team of critical care nurses and cardiologists.

Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU)

The Cardiothoracic ICU (CTICU) cares for patients having open-heart or lung surgery, heart transplant surgery, valve replacement or repair or placement of ventricular assist devices. The CTICU staff includes cardiothoracic surgeons, thoracic surgeons and specially trained nurses.

Cardiac surgery support groups and informational groups are available for both patients and their families. For more information, please call the social worker on staff at 203-688-3218.

Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)

The Medical ICUs (MICUs) on the York Street and Saint Raphael campuses serve patients with a wide variety of medical problems. The units care for patients who are in critical condition or whose condition necessitates specialized nursing and technology.

MICU staff have special training in critical care.

Family and patient support

The MICU team includes social workers, dietitians, care coordinators and a unit chaplain from Spiritual Care.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NNICU)

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NNICU) provides intensive care, support and neonatal transport services for critically ill newborn infants in Connecticut and beyond. Yale New Haven opened the world's first NNICU in 1960. 

Premature infants and babies are cared for by a team that includes neonatologists, neonatal nurses, respiratory therapists, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) specialists, pediatric pharmacists and other specialists. Medical and surgical physicians with special expertise in the care of critically ill newborns, including pediatric surgeons, cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, neurosurgeons, ear, nose and throat surgeons and other experts also participate in infants' care.

Family and Patient Support

As a patient- and family-centered care facility, Yale New Haven Children's Hospital welcomes parents as equal members of our team. Parents are encouraged to participate in daily, multidisciplinary rounds. A family support specialist is available upon request.

Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (Neuro ICU)

The Neuroscience ICU (Neuro ICU) cares for patients who have suffered stroke, traumatic brain and spine injury, aneurysm, autoimmune and movement disorders (including Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and Gullian-Barre) and neurological disorders. Patients in the unit are closely monitored for subtle neurological changes.

The medical staff includes neurologists, neurosurgeons and specialized nurses.

The Neuro ICU is an active participant in stroke and brain tumor research.

Family and Patient Support

A parent resource room is available to parents whose babies are patients in the newborn intensive care unit. Located on the unit and has a kitchenette, bathroom, lockers and a computer with Internet access.

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) cares for infants, children and teens. Specialized nurses provide intensive care for children recovering from catastrophic illness, trauma and surgery.

Patients are admitted to the PICU from other sites within the hospital's emergency department, operating rooms, clinics and from other hospitals by a critical care transport team, available 24 hours a day.

As a patient- and family-centered care facility, Yale New Haven Children's Hospital welcomes parents as equal member of our team. Parents are encouraged to participate in daily rounds. The Family Resource Center offers families access to computers, the internet and other resources for information on children's health care, specific diagnoses and other topics.

Rehabilitation and Wellness Center at Milford Hospital

The center provides:

  • Intensive, individualized therapy, including physical, occupational and speech therapies
  • Care coordinated by a physician specializing in rehabilitation
  • Multidisciplinary care, including specially trained rehabilitation nurses, social workers, and speech and language pathologists
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Home-care planning
  • Outpatient therapy

Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU)

The Surgical ICUs (SICU) on the Saint Raphael and York Street campuses care for patients who have had surgery for trauma, vascular, ear, nose and throat, urology, gynecology/oncology, maternal high risk, orthopedic, plastic and other conditions.

The unit is staffed by physicians and nurses specializing in intensive care.

The unit's care team can assist patients and their families who need support services.

InSight Tele-ICU

InSight Tele-ICU

Some ICU patients might benefit from additional support during overnight hours from Yale New Haven Health System's InSight Tele-ICU. A team of physicians and nurses specializing in intensive care staff the InSight clinical center in New Haven and use special equipment to assist the ICU teams at Yale New Haven Hospital. 

Transplantation ICU (TICU)

The Transplantation ICU (TICU) provides special care for patients undergoing liver and kidney transplantation. A medical staff person trained in critical care and certified in advanced cardiac life support is always available.

A full-time social worker is available to patients and their families.

InSight Tele-ICU

Some ICU patients might benefit from additional support from Yale New Haven Health System's InSight Tele-ICU. A team of InSight physicians and nurses specializing in critical care work out of a special center in New Haven. They use cameras and microphones to monitor patients and help ICU teams at participating hospitals.
