PGY2 Oncology Pharmacy

The PGY2 pharmacy residency in oncology is designed to train clinical oncology specialists. Graduates will be equipped to provide clinical pharmacy services for patients with malignancies in both the acute and ambulatory practice setting in collaboration with a diverse interdisciplinary healthcare team. The resident will gain experience through teaching, research, and the development of their own clinical practice skills throughout the year. 

The PGY2 Oncology Pharmacy Residency consists of a series of learning experiences that span a 52-week period.  Specific learning experiences and goals will be accomplished in discrete blocks of time, while others will occur longitudinally throughout the duration of the residency.  Residency time will be generally structured as follows:

Required Rotational Experiences: 43 weeks 

 Outpatient Clinics

• Melanoma
• Neuro-Oncology Clinic
• Gastrointestinal Clinic
• Thoracic Oncology Clinic
• GU Oncology Clinic
• Breast Cancer Clinic
• Leukemia Clinic
• Lymphoma Clinic
• Multiple Myeloma Clinic 
• Benign Hematology Clinic

 Elective Rotational Experiences:  4 weeks

• Heme/Onc Administration 
• Palliative Care/Hospice
• Pharmacogenomics 
• Informatics
• FDA (subject to availability) 
• Other/Repeat (with Residency Director approval)

Longitudinal Experiences

1. Residency project(s)
   • At least one major project for presentation at the Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association (HOPA) Annual Meeting or equivalent oncology meeting
   • Manuscript of either Research Project or Review Article suitable for publication
   • Monograph
   • Medication Use Evaluation
   • Administrative project

3. Staffing*
   • Two shifts every fourth weekend
   • Two-week staffing block
   • Oncology On Call Pager – every four weeks (pager coverage for 1 week periods)

* Any staffing shift may be filled at discretion of residency director

PGY2 Oncology Requirements for Successful Graduation:

1. Educational checklist complete
   1. Pharmacy Grand Rounds (1 hour presentation)
   2. Clinical Case Conference (1: 20 minute presentation)
   3. Nursing/Physician In-services (2)
   4. Community Service (1)
   5. Oncology Discussion Session (assigned presentations)
   6. Monograph (1)
   7. Policy, Protocol or Guideline (1) Complete a minimum of one major project (Clinical Research Project/Medication Usage Evaluation (1)) that will be presented as a platform or poster presentation at a local, regional or national conference (Ex: Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association Annual Conference). Administrative Project (1)
   8. Manuscript (1) (see below)
2. Portfolio complete (Completed documents for each checklist item uploaded to resident portfolio)
3. Longitudinal clinical research project completed 
4. Achieved at least 80% of ASHP residency objectives achieved for residency (ACHR). ACHR is defined as a preceptor/RPC/RPD marking  an objective "achieved" on at least two occasions or the resident has “achieved” the objective at least once WITH documentation demonstrating achievement of the objective as evaluated by the RPC/RPD. 
5. All required topic discussions completed (as designated in the APPENDIX of the ASHP PGY2 Oncology Pharmacy competency areas, goals, and objectives guideline)
6. Manuscript suitable for publication (Complete manuscript incorporating at least two rounds of preceptor feedback with drafts deemed acceptable by preceptor(s))
7. Compliant with all pharmacist mandatory requirements (e.g. current pharmacist license in good standing on file, completion of all mandatory training)

The learning experiences will include a series of learning activities designed to expose the resident to many facets of pharmacy practice with guidance from the preceptor. An individual resident plan and calendar will be developed for each resident.
