PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership

PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership The PGY2 residency program is designed to support pharmacists interested in pursuing high-level managerial, supervisory, and leadership positions in an institutional pharmacy practice setting. 

The PGY2 Residency in Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership consists of a series of learning experiences that span a 52 week period.  Specific learning experiences and goals will be accomplished in discrete blocks of time, while others will occur longitudinally throughout the duration of the residency.  Residency time will be generally structured as follows:

Interviews/Holidays/Time off
14 days plus 3 interview days
(not a contiguous block)

Required Learning Experiences: 42 weeks

  1. Health-System Pharmacy Administration (6 weeks)
  2. Health Systems Operations, Automation & Technology (6 weeks)
  3. Health Systems Operations Management (4 weeks)
  4. Foundations of Healthcare Budgeting (4 weeks)
  5. Strategic Budget Planning (4 weeks)
  6. Pharmaceutical Procurement and Contracting (4 weeks)
  7. Specialty Pharmacy Management (4 weeks)
  8. Clinical Pharmacy Management (6 weeks)
  9. Medication Safety (4 weeks)

Required Longitudinal Learning Experiences

  1. Medication Cost Management
  2. Drug Use Policy/Formulary Management 
  3. Strategic Planning in Healthcare 
  4. Pharmacist-in-Charge/Staffing
  5. Manager On-call 

Elective Learning Experiences:

  1. Children’s Hospital Leadership
  2. Ambulatory Care Administration 
  3. Oncology Leadership
  4. Research Project
  5. Project Management
  6. Clinical Redesign 

Longitudinal Learning Experiences

  1. 1. Residency project(s): 
    At least one major project for presentation at national or regional professional pharmacy conference (e.g. ASHP Meeting or Eastern States Residency Conference). 
  2. Education and Opportunities to precept:  
    Teaching Certificate Program
    Department publications 
    Nursing and Physician In-services
    Medication Safety/Quality Presentation
    Continuing education presentations
    Precepting of Pharm.D. students
  3. Staffing:*
    Two shifts every third weekend (12 day stretches required)  
*Any staffing shift including night shift may be filled at discretion of residency director

PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration Requirements for Successful Graduation:

  1. Educational checklist complete
  2. Portfolio complete (Completed documents for each checklist item uploaded to resident portfolio)
  3. Achieved at least 80% of ASHP residency objectives (Preceptor marked as "achieved" on at least one occasion or other documentation demonstrating achievement of the objective as evaluated by the RPC/RPD)
  4. Manuscript suitable for publication (Complete manuscript incorporating at least two rounds of preceptor feedback)
  5. Compliant with all pharmacist mandatory requirements (e.g. current pharmacist license in good standing on file, completion of all mandatory training)
 
The learning experiences will include a series of learning activities designed to expose the resident to many facets of pharmacy practice with guidance from the preceptor. An individual resident plan and calendar will be developed for each resident.
