PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy

PGY2 Program Purpose: PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.

The PGY-2 critical care residency consists of a series of learning experiences that span a 52-week period. Specific learning experiences and goals will be accomplished in discrete blocks of time, while others will occur longitudinally throughout the duration of the residency. Residency time will be generally structured as follows:

Required Rotations (8): 40 weeks

Elective Rotations (4): 10 weeks

• Pediatric ICU 
• Burn Critical Care
• Solid Organ Transplant
• Emergency Medicine - Bridgeport Hospital
• Bone Marrow Transplant, ICU focus
• Other/ Repeat (with Residency Program Director [RPD] approval)

Staffing*

• Two weekend shifts every third weekend (12 day stretches required) and approximately 1-2 weekday shifts per month.
• On-call formulary pager coverage (schedule to be determined)
• Weekend staffing primarily, day or evening critical care or TPN 

* Any staffing shift including night shift may be filled at discretion of residency director

PGY2 Critical Care Requirements for Successful Graduation

1. Educational Presentation/Publications Checklist complete
   a. Clinical case conference (1: 20 – 25 minutes)
   b. Pharmacy Grand Rounds presentation (1: 1 hour)
   c. University level lecture when available (1)
   d. Journal clubs (4)
   e. Nursing in-services (2)
   f.  Physician in-services (2)
   g. Submit an abstract and present a project at a state or national meeting
   h. Manuscript appropriate for publication 
   i.  Medication Use Evaluation or cost management project (1)
   j.  Longitudinal medication safety or quality improvement project (1)
   k. Community service (1) 
2. Portfolio complete (Completed documents for each checklist item uploaded to resident portfolio)
3. Cost management and longitudinal project completed 
4. Achieved at least 80% of ASHP residency objectives (Preceptor marked as "achieved" on at least three occasions or other documentation demonstrating achievement of the objective as evaluated by the RPC/RPD)
5. Manuscript suitable for publication (Complete manuscript incorporating at least two rounds of preceptor feedback)
6. Compliant with all pharmacist mandatory requirements (i.e. current pharmacist license in good standing on file, completion of all mandatory training)

The learning experiences will include a series of learning activities designed to expose the resident to many facets of pharmacy practice with guidance from the preceptor. An individual resident plan and calendar will be developed for each resident.
