A diagnosis of cancer can be stressful to patients and their families. Smilow Cancer Hospital has licensed clinical social workers available to help patients manage their feelings and concerns throughout their cancer care. Our social workers also facilitate many support groups that provide the opportunity to receive emotional and educational support and to talk with others who are undergoing similar treatment, or who have successfully completed treatment. These support groups are open to patients of Smilow Cancer Hospital and their families.
Our support group for patients with bladder cancer is held the first Monday of every month from 11 am - noon. This group is held in person for patients of Smilow Cancer Hospital that are recently diagnosed, actively in treatment, or have completed treatment for any type of bladder cancer. Our support group for patients with blood cancers is open to patients of Smilow Cancer Hospital that have received a diagnosis of any type of blood cancer (including leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma). The group is held via Teams and focuses on sharing experiences, coping mechanisms, and treatment information. If you are a patient of Smilow Cancer Hospital that has received a diagnosis of any type of brain tumor, we encourage you to join us virtually via Teams on the third Monday of every month from 3 pm - 4:30 pm to share your story and hear from others regarding this journey. Please join us on the first Tuesday of each month from 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm for our breast cancer support group. The group is held virtually via Teams and is open to patients of Smilow Cancer Hospital that have been diagnosed with any type of breast cancer and are at any stage in their care. Our support group for early onset cancers is open to anyone within Smilow Cancer Hospital that is between ages 18 – 49 that has been diagnosed with cancer. This support group is designed for families and caregivers of individuals diagnosed with early onset cancer between the ages of 18 and 49. Participants may include spouses, partners, parents, adult children, and others in supportive roles. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with any type of neuroendocrine cancer (also known as NETs), you can join our support group virtually via Zoom on the second Thursday of every month at 1 pm. The general cancer support group meets virtually via Teams the third Wednesday of every month at 2 pm at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Orange.
