Theranostics

What is theranostics?

Theranostics is a technique combining diagnostics and therapies to detect and treat cancer cells. This type of targeted diagnostic therapy is revolutionizing the treatment of neuroendocrine tumors and prostate cancer.

How is theranostics administered?

First medicine containing radioactive cells is administered through an IV. This allows cancer cells to be seen on PET/CT scans. Once cancerous cells are identified, a radiotracer is injected intravenously. It locates the cancer cells and administers radiation, destroying the cancer cells.

In collaboration with Yale School of Medicine, Smilow Cancer Hospital is proud to be the first site in Connecticut to use this innovative technology in the imaging and treatment of neuroendocrine tumors.

What are the advantages of theranostics?

This minimally invasive procedure has several advantages compared to other treatment options, including:

  • Improved likelihood of detecting cancer at an earlier stage.
  • More precise diagnosis and treatment by focusing on specific targets.
  • Minimized damage to the patient’s healthy tissues, reducing side effects.
  • Treatments tailored to the patient’s individual needs.

What are the side effects of theranostics?

Like any medical treatment, theranostics can cause side effects. Common side effects include:

  • Anemia
  • Bone pain
  • Changes in blood cell counts
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Dry mouth
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

Theranostics clinical trials

Together with Yale School of Medicine, we are contributing to the advancement of theranostics through its research, clinical trials, and collaborative efforts to improve patient care and access to these innovative therapies. We are actively involved in theranostics research and clinical trials, especially within neuroendocrine tumors and prostate cancer.
