Theranostics is a technique combining diagnostics and therapies to detect and treat cancer cells. This type of targeted diagnostic therapy is revolutionizing the treatment of neuroendocrine tumors and prostate cancer.
First medicine containing radioactive cells is administered through an IV. This allows cancer cells to be seen on PET/CT scans. Once cancerous cells are identified, a radiotracer is injected intravenously. It locates the cancer cells and administers radiation, destroying the cancer cells.
In collaboration with Yale School of Medicine, Smilow Cancer Hospital is proud to be the first site in Connecticut to use this innovative technology in the imaging and treatment of neuroendocrine tumors.
