U.S. buildings consume the majority of the country's electricity and a large percentage of raw materials. YNHH has incorporated "green building" in recent and current construction and renovation projects to improve energy efficiency, water conservation, air quality and the work environment.

Smilow Cancer Hospital and 55 Park St. LEED certified

The U.S. Green Building Council awarded LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification to Yale New Haven for Smilow Cancer Hospital and for the 55 Park St. building, which houses laboratory testing facilities and pharmacy services.

Smilow Healing Garden — green in more ways than one

The healing garden is a 6,000 square-foot rooftop garden atop Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven that provides a touch of nature for patients, families and staff members. The garden absorbs rainwater, reducing runoff. On this special "grass" ceiling, any sections without plants, grasses, flowers or trees are treated with an Energy Star-rated "green" roofing membrane.
