Adolescent Medicine

Adolescent Medicine provides a comprehensive array of clinical services for adolescents and young adults, ages 11-21 years.

Our specially trained physicians are experts in addressing medical issues specific to adolescents and we are committed to respecting the privacy and confidentiality of our young adult patients. Services are provided at both the Pediatric Specialty Center in Norwalk and Long Wharf in New Haven. We provide evaluation and management of complex medical issues, specifically in the areas of:

  • Problems of normal growth and development
  • Eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa and bulimia
  • Depression, anxiety disorders and other mental health issues
  • Gender Dysphoria and related concerns
  • Gynecological and menstrual disorders
  • Obesity
  • Reproductive health issues
  • Substance abuse and smoking cessation
  • Amplified pain syndrome

Diagnostic Evaluation Services
  • Evaluation of complex medical problems, such as gynecological concerns, substance use/abuse and psychological concerns

Eating Disorder Services
  • Medical evaluation
  • Weekly medical monitoring
  • Coordination of care
  • Nutritional assessment
  • Close communication with community mental health and nutrition providers
  • Extensive knowledge of current literature and treatment modalities for eating disorders

In-patient Eating Disorder Services
  • Medical evaluation
  • Medical stabilization
  • Intensive monitoring for re-feeding syndrome and other complications of eating disorders
  • In-patient consultations to Psychiatry, Nutrition, Social Work and Child Life
  • Initiation of weight restoration protocol
  • Evaluation for disposition and assistance in placement for post-hospitalization

Patients are seen at the Adolescent Comprehensive Care Clinic located at the Pediatric Specialty Center at One Long Wharf, and the Pediatric Specialty Center in Norwalk. Adolescent Medicine also provides primary and acute medical care at the Adolescent Clinic in the Primary Care Center at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
