What’s behind the curtain wall?

A glass “curtain wall” on the Ambulatory building
A glass “curtain wall” on the Ambulatory building is a visible reminder of the expansion and renovation of the Emergency Department and other clinical spaces at the existing Saint Raphael Campus.

If you’ve been on Orchard Street at the Saint Raphael Campus lately you might have noticed a gleaming new feature on the Ambulatory building near the Emergency Department entrance.

It’s a large glass wall – a “curtain wall” in architectural terms – behind which the expansion and renovation of the ED and a second-floor clinical space are well under way.

The project includes expanding the ED from 29,350 to 53,250 square feet and increasing the number of beds from 49 to 91. Six diagnostic imaging rooms will be added for X-ray, CT scan and ultrasound procedures; and space is being added for staff offices, locker rooms and a lounge. The project also calls for a new entry and parking area for ambulances.

Crews are expanding the Ambulatory building second floor from 16,350 to 25,800 square feet to house the Heart and Vascular Center and other clinical programs. This part of the project includes increasing the number of procedure labs from eight to 11 (with all new equipment); creating a multi-purpose procedure room with a C-arm device for imaging; and adding to the existing 20 prep and recovery spaces.

The Ambulatory building work is part of a larger expansion and renovation project at the existing SRC. Work is being done in phases and is expected to be fully complete in 2028. Other parts of the project, including an interventional radiology lab and a check-in waiting area near the cafeteria, were completed and opened to patients last year.

Watch for future updates on these and other major projects at the SRC.
