Left ventricular assist device (LVAD) is a mechanical pump used to support heart function and blood flow in people who have weakened hearts. An LVAD can be used to prolong a patient's life while awaiting a heart transplant and may also be used to extend life for a patient with end-stage heart failure who is not a transplant candidate. Yale New Haven Hospital is a leader in this form of mechanical support, and provides expert long-term care of these patients.

The Cardiomyopathy Program provides comprehensive diagnostics, consultation and advanced treatment for individuals with hypertrophic, arrhythmogenic (resulting from an irregular heart rhythm), or dilated cardiomyopathy and any other form of inherited disease of the heart muscle.
