How and Why We Measure Performance

Making sure patients receive safe, effective care is a continual process. We regularly monitor our performance to see where we're hitting the mark, and where we can improve. We collect and use data to make informed, timely decisions that translate to better patient safety and outcomes.

Yale New Haven Hospital's mission to deliver the highest quality, safest care is supported by a system-wide initiative to continually:

  • Monitor safety and performance in all departments, at all levels
  • Provide public access to internal and independent performance reports and quality scores
  • Use performance data to design and prioritize programs aimed at improving patient care and safety
  • Train staff at all levels in quality control and safety protocols
  • Engage patients, families, leadership, healthcare providers and employees in the process of evaluating, ensuring and improving quality and safety performance

Knowing how well a hospital performs allows you to make better choices about where to receive medical care. Helping you understand where we excel and strive for improvement is important to us. On this site you'll find up-to-date information and reports on the competency, quality and safety of care provided at YNHH.

Who Measures Performance?

Our team of quality assurance experts continually monitors and measures performance across the entire Yale New Haven Health system. We evaluate and survey patients and staff at all levels to create hospital "scorecards."  We also rely on reporting from national agencies such as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and The Joint Commission to tell us how we're doing.

Who and What Is Evaluated?

We evaluate all general and specialty units, using a variety of methods to collect data and look to studies done by independent agencies to rate patient safety, clinical quality, areas of expertise, use of technology, patient satisfaction, fiscal responsibility, operational productivity, operational efficiency, adherence to national standards of practice, patient outcomes and more.

How Does Data Help Improve Safety and Quality?

Performance reports and scores are shared with leadership, physicians, nurses, administrators and other key staff members so they can monitor progress and make informed decisions on where and how to make improvements. This data also drives changes and improvements to policies and day-to-day operations related to patient care and safety.

Who Can View Reports?

When it comes to performance data, our policy is transparent. That means, regardless of how we score or what the numbers say, we'll share the reports and statistics.
