Bereavement Service

In collaboration with our Palliative Care Service, the Bereavement Service at Yale New Haven Hospital provides care and support to families and friends following the loss of a loved one. Grief is a normal response to loss. Grief responses can be physical, emotional, and spiritual. Learning and understanding more about grief will help with healing.

A variety of services are offered to help with understanding grief and learning to live life without a loved one:

  • Short-term grief counseling by telephone outreach
  • Monthly bereavement seminar
  • Bereavement support groups
  • “Grief, Art and Healing” bereavement support group
  • Information and referral service for bereavement resources
  • Hope for the Holidays (support for coping during the holiday season)
  • Annual Memorial Service (a formal service to remember your loved one, conducted in collaboration with Spiritual Care and Patient Relations) Bereavement services are available on Yale New Haven’s York Street and Saint Raphael campuses and local care centers.
