Overview

Surgical oncology involves the use of surgical procedures to diagnose, treat, and manage cancerous tumors. Surgical oncologists often collaborate with medical and radiation oncologists to provide comprehensive and coordinated care for patients.

At Smilow Cancer Hospital, our approach is to give our patients detailed information to empower them to make informed decisions about their health. The surgical team thoroughly explains treatment options and what to expect before, during, and after surgery. As leaders in minimally invasive procedures, patients receive the benefit of faster recovery, less pain and minimal scarring.

Our surgical oncologists are leaders in neoadjuvant therapy, which is a treatment given before the main treatment, usually surgery, to shrink a tumor is used on patients. By shrinking the tumor, neoadjuvant therapy can make surgery easier, potentially allow for less extensive surgery, and may even make surgery possible in cases where it wasn't initially.

What is surgical oncology used for?

  • Diagnosis: Surgical oncologists perform biopsies and other surgical procedures to obtain tissue samples for cancer diagnosis.
  • Staging: They may perform surgery to determine the extent of cancer spread, which is crucial for treatment planning.
  • Treatment: Surgical oncologists remove cancerous tumors and surrounding tissues, aiming to eliminate or reduce cancer.
  • Management: They also address cancer-related symptoms and complications through surgery.
  • Collaboration: Surgical oncologists work closely with other specialists like medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and pathologists to develop comprehensive cancer treatment plans.
