Leaders in the Community

Recognizing that their roles extend beyond the clinical setting, YNHH nurses provide care, education and outreach throughout our communities.

• Every year, YNHH nurses participate in the New Haven Police Activity League (PAL) free summer camp for nearly 250 New Haven children. Nurses and other hospital staff provide education and hands-on demos on surgery, trauma care, safety, drug and alcohol prevention, preparing for healthcare careers and other topics.

• On Sept. 28, 2019, nurses and other staff from YNHH’s Sickle Cell/General Medicine Unit volunteered at the annual Sickle Cell Walk and 5K in New Haven, providing education on preventing sickle cell complications.
• Nurses’ ongoing efforts helped YNHH receive the 2017 national Foster G. McGaw Prize for Excellence in Community Service. Over the years, nurses have served as mentors to students in YNHH’s School-to-Career internship; provided healthcare services to the homeless; volunteered with Habitat for Humanity to build homes in the hospital’s neighborhoods; and supported other YNHH health and wellness efforts in the community.
• In addition to caring for COVID-19 patients, YNHH nurses have filled other vital roles during the pandemic, including staffing Yale New Haven Health’s COVID-19 Call Center, and specimen collection centers that have allowed thousands of people in the community to be tested.
