New Haven — Yale New Haven Hospital has been named to the NAFE Top 50 Companies and 10 Nonprofits for Executive Women by the National Association for Female Executives (NAFE). The list recognizes organizations whose policies and practices encourage women's advancement and whose numbers at the highest levels of leadership demonstrate that commitment.
"Yale New Haven Hospital is committed to equal opportunity at every level," said Marna Borgstrom, YNHH president and CEO. "Gender equality in the workplace is just one of the ways Yale New Haven distinguishes itself as the employer-of-choice in the region. We're delighted that NAFE has recognized our efforts."
According to NAFE, the number of women responsible for running operations at the NAFE Top Companies has reached 26 percent, significantly more than the 11 percent at Fortune 500 companies. At 13 of NAFE's Top Companies, women run a third or more of billion dollar-plus operations. Women at the NAFE Top Companies occupy 23 percent of board membership seats, compared to the Fortune 500's 15 percent.
NAFE measured the number of women in each company overall, in senior management, and on its board of directors To be declared a NAFE winner, companies must have women with profit-and-loss responsibility, women in senior ranks and at least two women on the board.
YNHH has been recognized as the employer of choice for the region, offering numerous benefits and programs to help employees meet work-life demands, such as internal advancement, tuition reimbursement, dependent tuition, employee health and wellness programs, and a unique performance incentive plan which allows employees to share in the hospital's financial success. The hospital has found that flexible work arrangements - such as telecommuting, part-time, casual status, compressed workweeks and job sharing - were particularly appealing to older workers and attractive to new applicants and mothers interested in returning to the workforce. In addition, YNHH offers a home ownership program to help employees buy their first home, as well as an employee hardship fund which provides limited financial assistance to employees with immediate, severe and temporary financial hardships.
