Yale New Haven Hospital

High school volunteers get a lesson on healthcare careers

High school volunteers
In August, YNHH’s high school volunteers learned about different healthcare careers from a panel featuring employees and leaders from clinical and non-clinical areas throughout the hospital.

Each year, thousands of volunteers donate their time and impact nearly every area of Yale New Haven Hospital, enriching the experiences of patients and their families, employees and community partners.

This year, volunteers included 145 high school students who have worked alongside YNHH employees throughout the summer. A vital component of YNHH’s high school volunteer program is the opportunity to experience a variety of healthcare roles and gain insights about different careers.

In August, student volunteers attended panel presentations featuring employees and senior leaders in clinical and non-clinical roles throughout YNHH. The panelists work in fields such as patient experience, pharmacy, laboratory medicine, diagnostic imaging, pathology, trauma services, medicine services and sterile processing. The careers represented on the panels included those requiring a college degree and others that don’t.

Panelists discussed their personal and academic challenges in pursuing their professional objectives and asked students about their future plans.

“The staff on each panel took pride in sharing their stories, providing authentic examples of the excitement that a hospital environment provides and underscoring the fact that volunteering is a great opportunity to see all the different types of careers available in health care,” said Eileen Hansen, manager, YNHH Volunteer Services.
