April is Donate Life Month

Yale New Haven Transplantation Center (YNHTC) is a beacon of hope for almost 750 Yale New Haven Health patients who are currently waiting for kidney, liver or heart transplant.

April is Donate Life Month, designated to recognize the importance of and need for organ donation. Nearly 104,000 people nationwide are on the transplant waiting list for organs, including kidneys, livers, lungs and hearts, according to United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS).

Did you know?

Of the 186 organs transplanted at Yale New Haven Hospital in 2023, 155 involved abdominal organs (liver or kidney) and 46 were from living organ donors. Nationally, more than 46,000 transplants were performed in 2023, including more than 6,900 from living organ donors.

Options for donation are living organ donation and/or deceased organ donation. YNHH’s Center for Living Organ Donors helps connect living donors with patients needing liver and kidney transplants.

YNHH and New England Donor Services staff will conduct a flag-raising ceremony at 10 am Friday, April 12, outside the hospital’s York Street entrance. On that day, YNHTC will also recognize Blue and Green Day. People are encouraged to wear these colors to show their support (employee dress code applies). These colors signify support for organ, eye and tissue donation awareness.
