HIV Care Program

The Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH) AIDS Care Program was established in 1984 in response to the increasing number of individuals being treated for HIV/AIDS at Yale New Haven Hospital. The program provides comprehensive care to adults, adolescents and children living with HIV/AIDS and their families and significant others.

Services include outreach, testing, counseling, outpatient and inpatient clinical care, clinical research trials and community support. The HIV Care Program is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of physicians, physician assistant, nurses, HIV counselors, social workers and clinical researchers.

Expanded HIV Testing Initiative

Although YNHH no longer offers anonymous HIV testing, due to new guidelines from the Department of Public Health which affect all testing sites in Connecticut, we do provide confidential (using name, address, etc.) rapid testing to adults and teens. Early detection results in better health outcomes.  Call to make an appointment for a free, 20-minute HIV test:  203-688-4120 or 203-680-2773.

Adult Outpatient Care

The outpatient HIV/AIDS clinic provides comprehensive care to patients living with HIV/AIDS, age 18 and older. In addition to HIV specialty/primary care, the clinic offers psychiatry/mental health support, social work, nursing, neurology, gynecology and specialized hepatitis C treatment for the co-infected. We offer specialty HIV Care for pregnant women in collaboration with our Obstetrical and Pediatric Services. The clinic also offers access to a number of clinical trials and other research opportunities. Referrals to other specialty services are provided.

Pediatric AIDS Care Program

The Pediatric AIDS Care Program provides specialized care to children and teenagers living with HIV/AIDS, as well as a transitional program for young adults into adult care. The clinic offers medical and nursing care and social work support.

In addition to caring for children and adolescents with HIV, the clinic follows pregnant HIV-positive mothers who are in care at the YNHH adult outpatient clinic and obstetrics throughout their pregnancy and screens the babies born to these mothers. The Pediatric AIDS Care Program also receives referrals to screen babies who are born at other hospitals in the area.

Community Outreach

The YNHH HIV Care Program is part of the continuum of care for HIV/AIDS services in the community. Program staff also play a leadership role on various task forces and committees and consult on program development.

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Program

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (or PrEP) is for people at risk for HIV acquisition. Individuals take HIV medicine daily to lower their chances of becoming infected. PrEP can stop HIV from taking hold and spreading throughout one’s body. It is highly effective for preventing HIV if used as prescribed and in combination with other prevention strategies. The YNHH PrEP Program began in 2014 as the first PrEP program in the state. Our PrEP Program operates out of the Yale Center for Infectious Diseases.
