Safety matters: Using PPE to prevent healthcare-associated infections

Employees must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriately to reduce healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) when caring for patients. Please remember to:

  • Adequately tie masks and ensure they cover the mouth and nose.
  • Tie gowns in the back at the neck and waist.
  • Use clean or sterile gloves only when indicated. Perform hand hygiene before and after glove use. Discard gloves after single patient use.
  • Cover all head and facial hair, including sideburns and at necklines, in all restricted and semi-restricted areas.
  • Keep an adequate stock of appropriate PPE in your area.

For more information, view the Safety Matters tip sheets in the Accreditation and Regulatory section of the employee intranet.
