Pediatric Transplantation

The Pediatric Transplantation Program at Yale New Haven Children's Hospital (YNHCH) leads the way in providing expert, comprehensive and compassionate care to children with acute and chronic heart, liver and kidney failure. Babies and children from around the world come to Yale New Haven Children's Hospital for comprehensive care before, during and after transplantation. We are proud to be the first and only children's hospital in Connecticut to offer pediatric heart transplantation.

We treat children with some of the most serious and complex conditions that require the highest level of medical and surgical expertise. Our transplant outcomes - both complication rates and long-term survival - are among the best in the nation. All children who receive an organ transplant are cared for in age-appropriate pediatric units where special emphasis is placed on the individual needs of the patient and their families.

The Renal Transplant Program

The Renal Transplant Program offers deceased and living donor transplants. Through the living donor program all cases are performed using the minimally invasive laparoscopic technique, which decreases pain felt after surgery. With a 100 percent one-year survival rate for pediatric recipients of both living-related and deceased kidney transplant recipients, the Renal Transplant Program is consistently improving dialysis management, transplantation surgery techniques and medication therapy strategies to provide the most current treatments and the very best patient care.

Pediatric Liver Transplantation

Pediatric surgeons and gastroenterologist team members are highly regarded by other physicians nationally and internationally for their successes in treating the full spectrum of pediatric liver problems, leading-edge research and education. This reputation has attracted referrals from physicians around the world who are looking for the best care available for their patients, such as split liver and living donor liver transplantation. Since 2007, the pediatric team has performed more than 74 transplants with 100 percent graft success and 100 percent patient survival. Whole liver, reduced segment liver, split liver and living related donor transplants are offered.
