Adams Neurosciences Center
Opening in 2027
|
This new center – marked by two patient care towers – will serve as the foundation of our advanced and innovative neurological and neurosurgical care for patients from across the country.
At more than 500,000 square feet, the towers will feature neurosurgery operating rooms, rehabilitation services, advanced neuroimaging, and several inpatient care units – all with single patient rooms.
The Adams Neurosciences Center will provide specialty care for varied conditions including epilepsy and seizures; movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease; spinal disorders; and neurovascular conditions including stroke and aneurysms. Focused offerings will include neuromodulation treatments that involve altering the body’s pain signals, and neurorestoration to help patients improve function and return to life, work and sports.
The Center will also support other hospital services. For patients’ convenience, a 200-space two-level underground garage will be below one tower.
Our long history of advanced neurosciences care has been recognized with Yale New Haven Hospital being named one of the “Best Hospitals” for Neurology and Neurosurgery by U.S. News & World Report.
Combined, the towers will have 184 single patient rooms, house four neurosurgery operating rooms, as well as radiology, biomedical imaging and interventional radiology and the existing McGivney Advanced Surgery Center. Features will include a welcoming lobby, gift shop, café, retail pharmacy and conference rooms. A conference center seating up to 245 people will extend across both towers.
Recognized internationally as a leader in innovative care for all types of epilepsy, the Yale Comprehensive Epilepsy Center was one of the nation’s first such centers and remains one of the most active and advanced programs in the world. With a Level 4 rating – the highest rating by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers – patients and families benefit from care that integrates expertise of the program’s clinical staff and advanced technology. Services include medical, surgical, dietary and device treatment options, including investigative therapies.
Our dedication to discovery has made Yale New Haven Hospital a world leader in neuroscience care and research. As the primary teaching hospital of Yale School of Medicine, Yale New Haven Hospital offers more than 100 unique clinical trials within the field of neurosciences.
Adams Neurosciences Center will embrace the full potential of Yale School of Medicine to develop, test, and implement emerging technologies and treatments that will improve outcomes around the globe for patients suffering from neurological disorders and disease.
A Center highlight will be one tower serving as an intensive care tower. It will consist of three 28-bed intensive care units (ICUs) -- a surgical ICU, a medical ICU, a neurosciences ICU, as well as a 28-bed neurosciences intermediate care unit. Intermediate care beds will be included on the medical ICU. All the Center’s inpatient rooms are private, single occupancy for maximum patient and family comfort. In addition, patients will benefit from in-room environmental controls, real-time health information access, and teleconferencing capabilities to connect remotely with loved ones.
This subspecialty, also known as functional neurosurgery, focuses on surgery designed to change how the nervous system works. This field includes technology that sends commands from the brain to a computer. Among services to be offered through the center are laser technology for epilepsy treatment and focused ultrasound to treat movement disorders. The program also includes deep brain stimulation which uses electrodes to stimulate nerves deep inside the brain and can relieve symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, and dystonia and helps patients with conditions like spinal cord injuries.
The Adams Neurosciences Center will house a 6,000 square foot neurorestoration center that will feature the virtual reality CAREN (Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment) system. This technology helps patients regain balance and movement skills through life-like computer-generated environments. The large rehabilitation gym will bolster our care team’s use of innovative therapies to help patients recover function and return to life, work and sports.
The Center’s outdoor sanctuary garden on the fourth floor of the Adams Neurosciences Center will be visible from all patient floors and serve as a respite for patients, families and visitors as well as staff.
Patients with serious acute or chronic spinal disease receive advanced, personalized, multidisciplinary spine care including access to specialists from neurosurgery, orthopedics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, behavioral health, pain management, and physical therapy. Services include cervical and lumbar disc replacements, artificial disc replacement, minimally invasive spinal surgery, vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty, spinal fusions, spinal decompressions, surgical intervention for spinal tumors, and treatment of vertebral fractures.
Both Yale New Haven Hospital campuses are certified as stroke centers by The Joint Commission and provide patients with 24/7 access to lifesaving, rapid and comprehensive stroke treatment. Our expert teams include specialists from vascular neurology, neurovascular surgery, neurocritical care, emergency medicine and other subspecialties. The nurse navigator program helps patients transition from the Emergency Department and inpatient care through rehabilitation to home. The Stroke Center also provides TeleStroke services to hospitals throughout the region that do not have stroke expertise.
