Graduate Medical Education Committee

The GMEC will monitor and advise on all aspects of resident education, as required by the ACGME. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, oversight of program job descriptions, progressive responsibilities during training, and monitoring quality and safety of patient care, treatment and services provided by participants in the GME programs.

Policies

  • The GMEC shall report to the Chief of Staff of Yale New Haven Hospital and the Dean of Yale School of Medicine.
  • The GMEC must meet at least quarterly and maintain written minutes. (See GMEC Committee Members page.)
  • The Designated Institutional Official (DIO) shall report annually on the activities of the GMEC, as mandated by the ACGME requirements, to the Medical Board of the Medical Staff of Yale New Haven Hospital and the Medical Committee of the Board of Trustees of Yale New Haven Hospital.

GME Committee Members

Voting membership on the GMEC Committee shall include:

  1. Chair: Director/Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education
  2. Associate Chair: Appointed by Chair
  3. GME Administrative Coordinators
  4. One Program Director from each of the major programs (>25 residents):
    • Anesthesiology
    • Internal Medicine
    • Emergency Medicine
    • OB/GYN
    • Pathology
    • Pediatrics
    • Psychiatry
    • Primary Care IM
    • Radiology
    • Surgery
  5. Representatives from the subspecialty fellowship programs for a three-year term:
    • Internal Medicine (4)
    • Pediatrics (2)
    • Psychiatry (1)
    • Surgery (2)
    • Pathology (1)
  6. Three Program Directors from the smaller programs (< or = 25 residents), for a three-year term on a rotating basis:
    • Cardiothoracic Surgery
    • Dermatology
    • Medical Genetics
    • Med-Peds
    • Neurological Surgery
    • Neurology
    • Nuclear Medicine
    • Ophthalmology
    • Orthopaedic Surgery
    • Otolaryngology
    • Plastic Surgery
    • Therapeutic Radiology
    • Urology
  7. The following:
    • Yale School of Medicine Deputy Dean for Education
    • Yale New Haven Hospital Senior Vice-President for Medical Affairs
    • Yale New Haven Hospital Counsel
    • Resident/Fellow representatives from programs (may have one or more peer-selected and one appointed Chief Resident)
    • Yale New Haven Hospital Administrator(s)
    • Veterans Administration Medical Center Associate Chief of Staff for Education
    • Members of the YSM Faculty appointed by the Chair of the GMEC
    • Members selected from categories e. and f. may be removed from the Committee by the Chair if a minimum of five meetings per year is not attended or if three meetings in a row are missed.
