Mary Dimiceli, M.D.

1st Year, Anesthesiology

The anesthesiology department and the faculty at Yale New Haven Hospital are phenomenal and they immediately made me feel at ease. It's an environment where I feel I can best grow as a professional and as a person.

I came to Yale New Haven Hospital in 2009 for a clinical fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery after doing a two-year surgical residency at Loyola University in Chicago. While I valued my experiences in surgery, I began to appreciate the field of anesthesiology more at Yale New Haven and ultimately decided that anesthesiology was right for me.

There's a strong camaraderie within the department. You get to know everyone and develop close relationships. Not only is the faculty helpful in fostering the skills necessary to becoming an excellent clinician and anesthesiologist, but as leaders in the field—they serve as excellent role models.

I live in Hamden, which is just outside of New Haven, about 12 minutes from the hospital. It's a friendly, family-oriented neighborhood and easily accessible to everything. Often, many of the residents will meet in New Haven after work at one of the downtown restaurants for happy hour, birthdays and other occasions. Or we might gather on the New Haven Green for concerts and other live events. New Haven and the surrounding towns are also great for those who love the outdoors and I frequently take advantage of nearby trails for running, hiking and cycling.

I came to Yale New Haven because I knew I'd receive a world-class education. It's a great bonus that we also have the opportunity to maintain a healthy balance with work, family exercise and entertainment.
