Advancing Care - 2025 | Issue 3

Can You Say “No” to a Weight Check at the Doctor’s?

People spout different excuses as to why they put off going to see the doctor. The one thing many people dread? Stepping on the scale.

Research shows that some people – especially women – avoid going to the doctor because weighing in triggers stress, anxiety and shame. This can be a significant barrier to getting the medical care you need. So, can you ever say “no” to being weighed? Our doctor weighs in on the subject.

We Want You – To Volunteer at YNHH!

Yale New Haven Hospital welcomes volunteers of all ages and skills on the York Street and Saint Raphael campuses as well as satellite locations. Volunteer Services will work with you to find roles that fit your schedule, abilities and interests. Volunteers impact nearly every area of the hospital:

  • Behind the Scenes: Volunteers assist staff with clerical duties, deliveries and light computer work.
  • Customer Service: Volunteers assist patients and visitors in navigating throughout the hospital or providing service to customers in the hospital’s gift shops.
  • Integrative Wellness Programs: Reiki and music/arts are a few examples of volunteer programs that enhance the experience of patients, families, staff and the community. Certification and expertise may be required. There is a current need for volunteers who can provide relaxation sessions at the patient’s bedside. Oasis for Healing volunteers are trained in the Reiki modality (must hold a minimum of Reiki 1 certification), guided imagery /meditation. Volunteers talk to patients prior to their visit about their level of pain, anxiety, sleeplessness, and nausea, followed by a 10–15-minute relaxation session.
  • Patient Support: Volunteers assist patients and staff in clinics as well as inpatient areas. Assignments may vary between moderate or intense patient support.

Help Us Get Closer to Free!

The 15th Annual Closer to Free Ride rolls off the starting line on Sept. 6, and you’re invited to ride along with us! The Closer to Free Ride fuels research and care at Smilow Cancer Hospital and Yale Cancer Center. Riders of all levels have the chance to experience five professionally designed and fully supported routes ranging from 10 to 100 miles long. If you’re not in the New Haven area, you can join as a Remote Rider and complete your own route wherever you may be.

Also consider sharing your energy and enthusiasm with the Closer to Free community as a volunteer at the pre-ride check-in, the start/finish line or on the ride route as a member of the Road Crew.
